Indian Farmers & Farm Lands

Indian Farmers and the Farmlands

In Indian traditions most recently there are number of deaths on account of suicide by farmers have been reported. Most of them are out off their lands and farming has been prevented and ultimately they have to give in to the pressure of the Governmental needs and have lost their daily bread ( their lands) and live in mere poverty.  They are not able to continue their livelihood with any other earning and they have to necessarily succumb to pressure from all the external agencies.  There is no written or set rules by the Government or the nodal agencies which come into play to take away the lands of the farmers without any benefit whatsoever for the farmer for his land being taken away for the Industrial use.

Let me mention you the recent example of farmers who have given their lands for the TATA group for building the Nano Car Factory in Singur district of West Bengal.  We are all aware that the land before it commissioned the project Mamta Banerjee took the farmers plight on her own hand started fighting tooth and nail for the Project not to take shape.  She went on a dharna continuously along with the farmers who had been approached and created a big havoc and the project was prohibited and not allowed to commission. After which Mamta won the elections and she came back to Power in West Bengal and what promises she had made to the farmers are of no avail today.

A lot of fertile land has been taken by the Tatas and none of them have been paid the full compensation for acquiring their lands.  Most of them are suffering now without any money for their day to day life even.  The union and its leaders who have promised all help during the agitation are all hiding themselves and there is no one to come to the rescue of the farmers.  Individual stories are huge and sorrowful. I am known one of the better off farmers in Singur, Ghosh decided after consulting his family to raise the money by selling two of the seven acres he had for undergoing a surgery at a hospital in Bengaluru; Thirteen years later, however life has come a full circle for Ghosh.  His son 22 years of age suffers from the same disorder.  Ghosh consulted several cardiologists in Kolkata, who suggested the same remedy. Valve Replacement.  The surgery would cost around 5 lakhs today.  He does not have the money nor does he have enough land left to sell. All he has is a piece of barren land, which would not fetch him more than 1 lakh now. What happened to the five acres of land he had? All of them were acquired by the government in 2006 for Tata's project. This fertile land used to give him three crops a year and as it was close to the National Highway, it was more lucrative in the eyes of potential investors.  But when Tata Motors decided to set up a plant in Singur to build the Nano car, Ghosh and 1200 farmers and land owners lost 400 acres, in forcible acquisition by the Left Front Government then.  They refused to accept the compensation offered by the Government.  However 1900 other farmers buckled under political pressure and took the offer giving up 600 acres.  Among those who did not take the compensation Ghosh was the biggest individual land- owner then.

The anger by all the farmers who were with the Mamta is clueless today. The new government under Mamta have failed to mitigate the sufferings of all the farmers who had given away their lands for a better income or an alternative solution.  But nothing has come back from the present Government once she was seen as Goddess her clout in Singur has diminished over th years.  Many people who lost their land had pinned their hopes on her government but now they regret that they had turned down the compensation too,  In fact Ghosh is no longer averse to the idea of Tat Motors setting up a factory in “Singur.  All he wants is return is a good price for his land Should there be any chance for the same he and other farmers feel that Tata should come back to our land.  Nano is lost but still they could set up something new after paying a good compensation. This is what their prayers are.

This is one incident in Kolkatta and there are enough is happening in all the states in this country and each and every state government is watching with their eyes closed.  How long our farmers and their lands suffer this predicament and what is the solution for them and their families.  It is a million dollar question......
